Filming tomorrow

Tomorrow we are filming at DCAS at 4pm. While there we are going to be shooting the performance shots of the music video.


Checklist of what equipment we need -

Below are the storyboards I have created for when we film. They will allow for myself and my group know exactly which specific shots and angles we need to shoot.

Lip sycning practice

Last week we decided to film Harry and Dom lip syncing in order to decide who would be the singer in the band for the music video. After doing this task we decided that Dom is going to do it, as he felt more comfortable in front of the camera.

Today we have been deciding on the different things we want to film for our music video. By planning this it is helping us with our storyboarding. 

The shot list means that we will have a variety of shots, which will make our video better to watch.

Email to The Kooks' Record Label

Today I emailed emailed Virgin EMI Records which is the record label that manages The Kooks.
The email was to ask for permission to use the song for our music video.

Below is the email I sent -

The email reads...
"Dear Sir/Madam

I am a Year 13 Sixth Form student from Tupton Hall School, and I am currently studying A-level Media Studies. 

As part of the course I have to create a music video for a pre-existing song, and my group have chosen to use 'She Moves In Her Own Way' by The Kooks. I am writing to seek permission to use the song in order to create a music video that is purely for educational purposes.

Location visit

Today myself, Molly, Harry and Dom went to visit the DCAS centre in Chesterfield to see if it would be appropriate for us to shoot some performance shots there.

The facilities were great and we have decided that next month we are going to film all the performance shots for the music video at DCAS.

There is a practice room and recording studio that is available for us to use. The facilities are extremely professional so using this location will help to make our music video look carefully planned and official.

 We are going to film some shots in here so it looks as though the 'band' are actually recording the song that they are singing for the music video.

In the recording booth we have decided that we will film some shots of the lead singer (Dom) lip syncing to the song.

Email to DCAS

On Friday myself and my group sat down and wrote an email to DCAS.

The email was enquiring about hiring the recording studio for 2 hours in December so that we could film the shots we need.

I then received an email saying that it would be possible for us to hire out the recording studio in order to film some shots for the music video. This is the email I received -

 

 

My group have decided that this week or next week we will visit DCAS so that we can take a look around and also discuss what day we would like to hire it out.

 



One location for filming - DCAS

After a group discussion about the locations of where we want to film the music video we decided that we would like to film some shots at DCAS.

DCAS is a creative art studios in Chesterfield that has facilities such as recording studios and practice rooms. We thought that it would be a great place to film shots of the 'band' singing/recording as it will look professional.

Research/Planning into clothing/style

Today my group are discussing who we think will be appropriate to be the actors in our music video.


As well as this we are researching what the actors should look like and what they should wear.

 

These are some pictures of 'The Kooks'. In each picture it is clear that the band are an Indie band...

• They are all dressed in skinny jeans
• All wearing darkish clothing
• Their clothing looks thrown together and not carefully planned unlike Pop bands
• They are dressed very casually. Eg - Jeans and casual jacket
• They do not look clean cut as
• The bands poses do not look planned, instead they look chilled and natural.

Here are some photos of other Indie bands. These photographs are similar to the pictures of The Kooks which shows that Indie bands tend to look a certain way. Just like The Kooks, these bands are dressed in dark, casual clothing and they are simply stood with a blank expression looking at the camera.


As well as what the band is wearing, it also important that we style the female actor in our music video appropriately. Below are some clothing ideas of how I think she should be styled.





Comparison to other genres

 - N-Dubz   - The Saturdays

- One Direction



These are photos of bands of different genres - The Saturdays and One Direction are both mainstream Pop bands, and N-Dubz was a hip-hop group.
N-Dubz are posing in a 'cool' way to emphasise their hip hop background, and they are wearing dark baggy clothing that suggests they aren't too bothered about their appearance.
The 2 pop bands are both  dressed in mainstream fashionable clothing: One Direction in smart jeans/chinos and t-shirts, and The Saturdays in short, girly clothing. The 2 bands are both obviously posing to promote their image.

Conclusion
After researching into different clothing and styles it is clear that style is extremely important to identify what genre of music the artist creates. When we create our music video we are going to pay close attention to what our actors are wearing.

This is a video of our group meeting in which we discussed various reasons for why we decided to choose the song 'She Moves In Her Own Way' by The Kooks.

Audience for our music video

Myself and Molly decided to research who the audience for our music video will be and we decided that it will be targeted at...

• Targeted at both males and females
• Age range 16-21
• Young people that listen to Indie (Pop) music
• Generally aimed at White British young people because of the actors, but not specifically aimed at them
• Targeting people that live/from the UK
• Working to middle class (because of the setting, props and costume)
• Not specific to any religion
• Aimed at people from urban backgrounds AND rural backgrounds as we are going to be using a rural/field setting and a recording studio
• It will be set in the Midlands/North but it isn't specific to people that live in this part of the UK

Song choice

After much deliberation our group has finally decided on the song we are going to make a music video for. We decided to use 'She Move In Her Own Way' by The Kooks.
We all agreed that this song would be good to use as the band are an Indie-Pop band that we all like.

The Kooks are British band that formed in 2004. Since forming they have had success with songs such as "Naive", "Shine On" and "She Moves In Her Own Way".

The song we are using was featured on their first album "Inside In/Inside Out" and the single was released on 26th June 2006. It found success in the UK reaching number 7 in the Official UK Chart.

A2 Coursework - new group

For the A2 music video coursework I am now working in a group of 4 instead of a group of 2.
I am working with Molly Brailsford, Dominic Collins and Harry Jackson.
We decided to merge with another group so that all of our individual skills could work together in different areas in order to produce a great music video!
